Kanamori Takazan (birth name Yoshio) was born on July 29, 1889 in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. He showed an early aptitude in music and composition. He studied hard and became a doctor specializing in internal medicine.
In September, 1909 he entered the Tozan-ryū school of shakuhachi, Nakao Tozan being his teacher. He progressed quickly through the ranks, earning his Shihan (masters license) in 1917 and his DaiShihan (grand masters license) in 1923.
He served many terms as councilor in the Tozan-ryū and spent many years on the master examining committee.
He was also a prolific, award-winning composer as well as a scholar, publishing many articles on musical theory in the likes of Sankyoku, Rhythym, and Kangen magazines and newspapers.
