Tanaka Inzan (Tanaka Uzaburō) was born on February 21,1896 in Kitakatsushika District, Saitama Prefecture. He graduated from Kasukabe Junior High School in March 1913, completed the second year of business school at Waseda University in June 1919, and moved to Korea in September 1922 for a job opportunity in advertising, eventually opening his own office. His shakuhachi studies began in June of 1923 in Korea under the Tozan-ryū master Ichimaru Reishū (later Yūzan). He made good progress: in December, 1925, he finished the Chuden rank and, by May, 1927, he’d completed the Okuden repertoire. By June, 1929 he successfully sat for his Jun-shihan (Associate Master) examination and received the name Inzan. He was appointed as a member of the Tozan-ryū Tokyo Executive Committee. His hobbies were baseball, horse racing, and watching movies.
