Joined the Pro Musica Nipponia in 1978, Makoto Takei took part in numerous domestic and overseas concerts as a shakuhachi and Japanese flute player. Together with his members he performed with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Chinese National Orchestra. He also took part in recordings by Yo-Yo Ma. He has been a member of Taiko soloist, Eitetsu Hayashi's group since 1989. He has played in concerts in South America, Belgium, Switzerland and Malaysia, etc., and with Kiyohiko Senba's Asian Fantasy Orchestra, he toured South East Asia. He has two groups of his own Touhouibun (A Strange Story from The Far East) and Souhonzan. Touhouibun was formed as a trio in 2000 by Akira Horikoshi on drums, with Makoto Takei on shinobue and shakuhachi, and Kumiko Shutou on Satsuma Biwa. Later, Hiroshi Yoshino on woodbass, and Akihito Obama on shakuhachi joined them. They are based in Tokyo and play live two to three times a year. Their aim is to combine song, dance and musical performance as a composite art form. Significant guests to date include, Yosuke Yamashita (Pf), Aska Kaneko (Vl), Takio Ito (Vo), Jun Fukamachi (Key), Yu Kasugano (Noh dancer). Sohouhonzon was formed in 1998. Members include Mikako Mihashi (Vo), Tatsuo Kondo (Key), Masahiro Uemura (Ds), Yuji Katsui (Vn), and Makoto Takei (flute/shakuhachi). They are based in Tokyo.
