Keisuke Zenyoji started shakuhachi at the early age of 6, with his father, a direct recipient of the art of the great Nyodo Jin. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Tokyo University for the Fine Arts and Music and has there for several years. While there he studied under Goro Yamaguchi, Living National Treasure. In 1990, he played solo shakuhachi honkyoku at the National Theater in Tokyo and, in 1992, his honkyoku was broadcast on the NHK Hogaku radio show, unusual accomplishments for such a young player in conservative Japan.
