Satoshi Shimura was born in Nagano and graduated from Osaka University of Arts with a major in Technology of Music. As a student, Shimura became interested in combining live and electronic music and also began studies of the shakuhachi with grand master Chikuho Sakai of the Chikuho School. Shimura also made extensive field work around the country learning and performing the pieces and performing techniques of the komuso shakuhachi, most of which are now on the verge of extinction. He applies his extensive technological background to the study and analysis of this ancient music He presently performs and researches the shakuhachi and is a full time lecturer at Osaka University of Arts.
