Composer/performer Elizabeth Brown received a Master's degree in flute performance from The Juilliard School, then started composing in the late 70's. She began studying shakuhachi with Ralph Samuelson in the mid-80's, and has written a series of pieces combining Japanese and western instruments. Brown's music has been heard in Japan, the Soviet Union, Colombia, Australia and Vietnam as well as across the US and Europe, and she has been commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, and Newband, among others. As a flutist, she has performed at major venues here and abroad, and recorded extensively. In addition to flute and shakuhachi, she plays theremin and dan bau (traditional Vietnamese monochord). A solo CD, Blue Minor: Chamber Music by Elizabeth Brown was recently released by Albany Records.
